Software

All a, c, e and gS Series MFDs use the LightHouse user interface.

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-Software

All a Series, c Series, e Series and gS Series MFDs run on Raymarine’s ‘Lighthouse’ software which is . Any or all of these series can therefore link together seamlessly on the RayNet network. Features and functions are therefore very similar in their appearance and functionality bearing in mind screen size and keypad/touch screen availability. The latest version of LightHouse can be downloaded here (when available). Software is easily upgradeable by saving the software to a blank Micro SD card and inserting into the chart slot.

Networking

All a, c, e and gS Series MFDs can be connected on RayNet (Ethernet).

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-Networking

All a Series, c Series, e Series and gS Series MFDs  can be connected on the RayNet (Ethernet) network as long as network size limitations are observed – up to 6 screens plus radar and sonar modules. Some MFDs have more network ports than others so this needs to be considered but a network switch can be added to expand the system if required. Most networking is achieved with RayNet  plugs but there are some units which require RJ45 connections for which there are a range of cables and converters.

Seatalk ng

All a, c, e and gS Series MFDs can be connected on Seatalk ng (NMEA2000).

Raymarine-Guide-Seatalk-ng

Generally speaking it is numerical data on the Seatalk ng bus, such as GPS, depth, speed, wind, engine data and AIS amongst many others. The MFD is connected via a spur cable to the backbone which runs between all the Seatalk ng devices on board it can then receive any information which is being transmitted from any device that is connected. Any data generated by the MFD will also be available to other units on the network such as instruments and autopilot.

Chartplotter

All a, c, e and gS Series MFDs have a built in chart plotting application, just add charts!!

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-charts

Cartography is provided by Navionics on a Micro SD Card which is physically placed in the chart reader to give full chartplotting functionality. All Raymarine MFDs can use Navionics Platinum+, Gold or Sonar Charts. Some MFDs come with cartography bundle options outlined below but please be aware of the limitations of Navionics Silver and the area size of small Gold charts.

Small Gold Chart – Blank Micro SD card with Small Navionics Gold download code.
EU Silver Chart  – Pre-loaded Navionics Silver Charts (Low detail) for Europe
RoW Silver Chart  – Pre-loaded Navionics Silver Charts (Low detail) for Rest of World (not including Americas).

GPS

All a, c and e Series MFDs (except e165) have a built in GPS antenna.

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-gps

Only the e165 and gS series do not come with GPS built in. All other MFDs have a built in 50 channel GPS receiver. Bear in mind the built in antenna will not necessarily work below decks, it is often effective through GRP decks – albeit with a degraded signal -but wood and steel would certainly block satellite reception. If an MFD is to be mounted below decks it can either be connected to another MFD mounted above decks or an RS130 GPS antenna.

Radar

All current Radomes and open array scanners can be connected on RayNet

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-Radar

Display and adjust all the functions of  any digital radar from any MFD when a radar unit is connected to the RayNet network. Radar can then be overlaid onto the chart provided a source of fast heading data is connected on Seatalk ng. AIS data can also be overlaid on to the Radar image if an AIS unit is connected on Seatalk ng.

See our Raymarine Radar Guide for more details and a full product range

CCTV Cameras

All c, e and gS Series MFDs have composite video capabilities

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-CCTV

Standard and infra red analogue cameras such as the CAM100 or CAM50 can be connected but video image cannot at present be transmitted over the RayNet network. This means that cameras must be connected directly to the MFDs. A third party video switcher could be used to manage larger systems. Composite video inputs are all BNC connectors but numbers vary between Series:

a Series has no camera capabilities at present
c Series (and the e7/e7D) has one composite input on the power cable
e Series (except for e7 / e7D) has one composite input on the power cable and the option of adding another with the R70003 adaptor cable
gS Series has 2 composite video inputs as standard

Thermal Night Vision Cameras

All c, e and gS Series MFDs have Thermal Camera capabilities

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-Thermal

The full range of Raymarine Thermal and dual payload cameras can be connected to the MFDs for viewing and control. All MFDs with LightHouse software are able to control the full range of thermal cameras for pan, tilt and zoom functions, this requires connection on the RayNet network. The video is at present transmitted via composite analogue signal so check composite inputs available below bearing in mind the dual payload cameras have 2 video outputs. A third party video switcher could be used to manage larger systems.

a Series has no camera capabilities at present
c Series (and the e7/e7D) has one composite input on the power cable
e Series (except for e7 / e7D) has one composite input on the power cable and the option of adding another with the R70003 adaptor cable
gS Series has 2 composite video inputs as standard

ClearPulse Digital Sonar

Can be added with a CP300 sonar processor connected via RayNet or DirectConnect to some models

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-CP300

Up to 1kW dual frequency fishfinder transducers can be connected via a CP300 Digital Network Sonar Module on RayNet to be viewed and controlled by any MFD on the network. a, c and e Series MFDs all have DirectConnect options meaning a transducer can be connected to the back of the MFD, furthermore, any other MFDs on the Network can then view and control sonar. Please be aware that although a 1kW transducer can be plugged in to an MFD, the power output is limited to 600W.

See our Raymarine Fishfinder Sonar Guide for more details and a full product range

CHIRP Broadband Sonar

Can be added with a  CP450C Broadband sonar processor connected via RayNet

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-CP450

A range of CHIRP transducers are available to connect to a CP450C Broadband Sonar Processor. This is then connected to the RayNet network to display and control the advanced sonar features on any MFD connected to the network. There are no DirectConnect options.

See our Raymarine Fishfinder Sonar Guide for more details and a full product range

DownVision Sonar

Can be added with a CP100 DownVision sonar processor connected via RayNet or DirectConnect to some a Series models

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-CP100

A choice of plastic or bronze through hull transducer or transom mount transducer can be connected via a CP100 DownVision Sonar Module on RayNet to be viewed and controlled by any MFD on the network. a Series MFDs have DirectConnect options meaning a transducer can be connected to the back of the MFD, furthermore, any other MFDs on the Network can then view and control DownVision sonar.

See our Raymarine Fishfinder Sonar Guide for more details and a full product range

Wifi

As standard on all but some a Series models

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-Wi-FiBuilt in Wifi allows for remote control and viewing of an MFD on IOS and Android devices with a downloadable app. Waypoints can also be transferred wirelessly from the Navionics  passage planner app. All c, e and gS Series MFDs have built in Wifi but in a Series it is an option.

AIS

Overlay and monitor AIS targets on chart or radar screens

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-AIS

Connect an AIS Receiver or Transceiver on Seatalk ng to view all vessels within range on the chart, radar or both at the same time. The MFD can also display Vessel information and monitor targets to alert the operator to potential collisions. Although the preferred method of connection between MFD and AIS is Seatalk ng, if that is not available, all MFDs except a Series have NMEA0183 capabilities (See NMEA0183  section below for more details).

See our Raymarine AIS Guide for more details

Instrument Data

Dedicated pages and data boxes for displaying instrument data

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-Instruments

Data such as speed, depth and wind can be displayed on dedicated instrument pages, data boxes or on the data bar at the top of the screen. This requires the relevant transducers to be connected on the Seatalk ng network with or without an instrument system.

See our Raymarine Instrument Guide for more details and a full product range

Engine Instruments

Dedicated pages to show engine data

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-Engine

Most NMEA2000 compatable Engines can be connected to the Seatalk ng network via an interface box. This allows all of the engine data available to be displayed on the MFD on dedicated customisable dash board pages. Twin engine installations would require 2 interface boxes.

Autopilot

Control and display Raymarine Evolution Autopilot

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-Autopilot

All MFDs except a Series have a dedicated standby button. This pilot button brings up the autopilot control pop up and allows full control of the pilot, it also means there is a quick way of disengaging the pilot in case of emergency. The a Series control is accessed via the menu. It is always advisable to have a separate pilot display but Evolution autopilots can be fully controlled and calibrated via the MFD. Older SPX range pilots can be controlled but not calibrated by the MFD.

See our Raymarine Autopilot Guide for more details and a full product range

Stereo Control

Fusion IP700 and AV700 stereos can be linked on RayNet to give full control of the audio system.

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-Fusion

The Fusion IP700 and AV700 marine audio systems can be linked to the RayNet network with an RJ45 adaptor cable. This allows any MFD on the network to control the stereo and view album artwork on a dedicated page. This eliminates the need for a stereo remote on the flybridge of a power boat or in a sailing boats cockpit. It can also be very useful when the stereo has to be mounted somewhere awkward. Please note, you cannot watch DVDs or MP4s on this application but c, e and gS series do have a composite video input which could be used for this and displayed on the camera page. See the camera details for video input information.

Bluetooth

All Raymarine MFDs have BlueTooth capabilities.

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-Bluetooth

This allows some basic control functions with the RCU-3 such as changing application and zooming. It also allows connection to a Bluetooth music playing device such as iphone or android phone to Play, Pause and Skip tracks.

Weather

Dedicated Sirrus weather page.

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-Weather

With a Sirrus Satelite radio receiver attached to the system, weather data can be overlaid on the chart. This feature is only available in the US as Sirrus is not available elsewhere.

NMEA 0183

All c, e and gS Series MFDs have multiple NMEA0183 inputs / outputs.

Raymarine-Guide-MFD-NMEA

Although NMEA0183 has been largely superseded by NMEA2000 there are still some instances where it is useful. Some DSC VHFs only receive position data via NMEA0183 and older PC navigation software will require it.  AIS is often connected via NMEA0183 but at a higher baud rate (38400), GPS data for a VHF would be at 4800. All c, e and gS Series MFDs have 2 NMEA0183 ports which can be set at different baud rates. 1 of these is an input and output and the other is input only. This allows an AIS and VHF to be connected to the MFD. a Series does not have NMEA0183 capabilities but it is easy to get an output with an Seatalk ng converter for outputting position to a VHF. To convert NMEA both ways would require a third party product such as the Actisense NGW-1.
