Garmin GT Transducer

Garmin next year (2015) will be offering a full range of what they call scanning transducers.

The aim of this guide is to help you choose the correct transducer for your application.

The Basics

Sonar – Sound Navigation And Ranging is a technique that uses sound propagation to detect under water targets.

Conventional  – The depth of an object is calculated by the time the transmitted pulse takes to return.

CHIRP – Instead of sending just 1 single frequency, CHIRP sends a continuous sweep of frequencies. CHIRP sonar technology then interprets frequencies individually upon their return. Since this continuous sweep of frequencies provides CHIRP with a much wider range of information, CHIRP sonar is able to create a much clearer, higher resolution image.

Frequency – Sound waves are absorbed by water – Salt water absorbs sound waves at a greater rate than fresh water. The lower the frequency of the sound wave the less it will be absorbed by water.

Garmin HD-ID Sonar

Cone shaped beam

Garmin-50-200

Traditional sonar using Conventional two frequencies,  either 77/200 kHz (for shallow or fresh water use) or 50/200 kHz (for deep salt ware use)

Garmin CHIRP Sonar

Cone shaped beam

Garmin-CHIRP

Traditional sonar using CHIRP multiple frequencies 80-160kHz provides huge advantages in detail, resolution and accuracy at much greater depths.

Garmin DownVü CHIRP

An elliptical shaped beam

Garmin-DownVu

DownVü scanning sonar gives you an ultra clear sonar picture of objects, structure and fish that pass below your boat, either 455/800 kHz (for shallow or fresh water use) or 260/455  kHz (for deep salt ware use)

Garmin SideVü CHIRP

Two narrow elliptical shaped beams

Garmin-SideVu

SideVü scanning sonar shows fish and structure that is off to the sides of your boat, either 455/800 kHz (for shallow or fresh water use) or 260/455 kHz (for deep salt ware use)

Transducer Type

Any air flow between a transducer and the water will stop it from working.

Garmin-GT

Transom Mount  (TM) – For use on boats with outboard engines or outdrives.

Through Hull   (TH) – For use on boats with propellers and rudders.

Through Hull Pair (THP) – SideVu transducers when for hull deadrise is greater than 5 degrees.
