Anchoring Systems & Capstans

Sizing an anchoring system correctly
Capstans and windlasses need to be sized to the boat, not just to the anchor. Chain diameter and grade have to match the gypsy exactly, since a capstan cut for 8mm chain will slip or jam on anything else, and rope to chain splices need to be sized for the same gypsy. Pulling power is generally quoted for short bursts rather than continuous use, so oversizing a little for a heavier boat, longer scope, or deeper anchoring grounds tends to pay off in reliability rather than raw lifting force alone.
Deck thickness and the space below it both affect which capstan or windlass model will actually fit, since the motor and gearbox usually sit below deck while only the drum shows above. Wiring needs heavy gauge cable and a dedicated breaker close to the battery, as anchoring gear draws far more current than most other 12V or 24V equipment on board. Ask us if you are unsure which chain and rope combination suits a given model.
