Radome versus open array
A radome suits most sailing and small to mid-size power boats: it is self-contained, light enough for a mast or arch mount, and easy to cable back to the display. An open array gives a narrower beamwidth for better target separation at range, but the antenna is heavier, needs a stable mounting platform, and draws more current, so check your pedestal or arch is rated for the extra weight and windage before choosing one.
Radar only works with a chartplotter from the same manufacturer's network: a Simrad radome needs a Simrad or B&G display on the same Ethernet backbone, and the same applies to Raymarine, Garmin and Furuno. Check your existing MFD's radar compatibility before ordering, and budget for enough Ethernet cable run between the mount and the helm.
Mounting height matters too: raising the scanner clears obstructions and extends the radar horizon, but adds to the cable run and to the load on the mast or arch.
