Planning a marine electronics system
Marine electronics work best when they are specified as a system rather than bought piece by piece. Start with the display, because the size and processing power of the multifunction display sets what radar, sonar and camera options you can add later. From there, work outwards to sensors, transducers and the network that joins them.
Most modern equipment talks over NMEA 2000, a single backbone that carries GPS, depth, wind, engine and AIS data between devices from different manufacturers. Older NMEA 0183 kit can usually be bridged in with a converter. Radar, sonar and video generally stay on the manufacturer's own Ethernet network, which is why mixing brands at the display end is rarely straightforward.
Finally, budget the power. A large display, open-array radar and thermal camera together draw considerably more than a modest instrument fit, and a stable, well-fused 12V or 24V supply is what keeps the whole system reliable at sea.
