Choosing between Icom's radio ranges

Icom's fixed VHF sets span from straightforward DSC only models to units with built in AIS receive and colour displays, so the right choice depends on whether you already have AIS on a separate chartplotter feed or want it combined at the radio. Command microphone compatible models let you run a second station at the flybridge or cockpit without a full duplicate radio, which suits larger helm layouts.

Handhelds cover a similar spread, from basic waterproof units to models with GPS and DSC distress calling built in. If DSC matters to you, an MMSI registered to the vessel is required for the distress and calling functions to work as intended, and that's worth sorting before the radio goes in rather than after.

Antennas and cabling are sold separately from the radios themselves, so factor mast height, cable run and connector type into the total spec rather than treating the radio as a standalone purchase.
