What a black box sonar module adds
A sonar module is a separate processing unit that sits between the transducer and the display, rather than sonar built directly into the chartplotter itself, and it is chosen mainly for the extra processing power and channel count it brings. That typically means running CHIRP alongside a downscan or sidescan imaging channel simultaneously, or driving a forward-looking sonar, which many integrated chartplotter sonars cannot manage on their own.
Because the module does the processing, transducer choice matters as much as the module itself. A high-performance module paired with a basic transducer will not outperform the transducer's own limits, so it is worth matching frequency range and imaging capability between the two rather than assuming any transducer will unlock the module's full performance.
Networking runs over Raymarine's own SeaTalkhs or a standard Ethernet connection back to the display, separate from the NMEA 2000 backbone carrying other instrument data, so check which network your existing Axiom or eS-series display uses before adding one.
