Positioning a satcom mount correctly
Where you mount a satcom dome affects reception as much as the equipment itself. The antenna needs a clear line of sight across as much of the horizon as possible, so plan its position relative to masts, radar arrays and other domes before drilling, since even a narrow obstruction can cause dropouts at certain headings.
Radar combination mounts let you stack a satcom dome above or alongside a radar scanner on one pole, which keeps deck penetrations to a minimum but does mean checking that radar's rotation and beam pattern aren't obstructed by the satcom hardware above it, and vice versa.
Cable management is worth planning at the same time as the mount itself: most satcom domes need a dedicated coax or data run down to a below decks unit, and routing that cleanly through the mount's base avoids a loose cable flapping in the wind at the top of a mast or arch.
