DSC setup that gets missed at install

A fixed VHF is only as useful as its DSC function, and the single most overlooked step at commissioning is entering the MMSI number correctly before first use, since most radios lock this setting after the first entry and require a factory reset to change it. GPS input, whether from the boat's chartplotter over NMEA 2000 or from an internal antenna on the radio itself, is what allows a distress call to transmit your position automatically rather than relying on the coastguard to ask for it over voice.

Waterproof rating is worth checking against where the set is actually mounted rather than assumed from the word marine; an open helm exposed to green water needs a higher-rated set than one under a hardtop. Hailer and foghorn functions, where fitted, usually need an external speaker wired separately from the main cabin speaker, so confirm this is included before assuming the feature works out of the box.
