Mixing SimNet with standard NMEA 2000 gear
SimNet and standard NMEA 2000 carry exactly the same data; the difference is the connector. SimNet uses Simrad's own waterproof fitting rather than the five-pin Micro-C connector used by most other N2K brands, so a mixed-brand network needs adaptor cables or T-pieces at the point where the two fittings meet, rather than expecting a Simrad device to plug straight into a Garmin or Raymarine backbone. It is generally simpler to standardise the main backbone on one connector type and adapt individual devices, rather than mixing fittings along the run itself.
As with any NMEA 2000 network, the backbone still needs terminators at each end and a single power feed, sized to the combined draw of every device on the network; adding SimNet devices to an existing backbone does not change that rule, only the connector used to join them. If you are extending an existing N2K network with Simrad instruments, check which adaptor you need before ordering cable, since a mismatched fitting is a common hold-up.
