Radome or open array explained
Radome and open-array scanners suit different boats more than different budgets. A radome is self-contained, draws less power, and is straightforward to mount on an arch or pole, making it the usual choice on smaller boats and anywhere mast or arch space is limited. An open array gives a narrower beam width and generally resolves targets more clearly at range, but the rotating array needs enough clear space around it to swing safely and takes noticeably more current to run.
Beam width is the practical difference that matters most at sea: a narrower beam separates two close targets, such as a small boat near a headland, more clearly than a wider one. Mounting height also affects range and how well the radar sees over waves, so position matters as much as scanner size. Both types network over the same SeaTalkng backbone as the rest of a Raymarine helm, so an upgrade generally slots into an existing system rather than requiring separate wiring.
