Specifying electronics for commercial use

Commercial and workboat installations tend to have different priorities from a leisure fit-out: continuous duty cycle rather than occasional use, and in many cases a requirement for equipment carrying specific type approval rather than just a general marine rating. A Class A AIS transceiver, for example, is mandatory on SOLAS vessels and behaves differently on the network to the Class B units fitted on most leisure boats, transmitting more frequently and at higher power.

Redundancy also matters more on working vessels: dual power feeds, backup GPS antennas and networked instrument displays that keep working if one screen fails are worth planning in from the outset rather than added later. IPX-rated housings and connectors suited to constant washdown and vibration, rather than occasional spray, are worth checking on any equipment destined for an open working deck.
