Wiring in a new socket or switch
Check the IP rating of any switch or socket against where it will actually sit. A fully exposed helm position needs a higher-rated waterproof unit than one mounted under a spray hood or inside a dry console, and a rating on the switch itself means little if the cutout and gasket are not sealed correctly during fitting. USB sockets vary in output current, so match the socket to the devices likely to be charged, since an older, lower-output USB socket will charge a modern phone or tablet slowly compared with a higher-output unit.
Every socket and switch circuit still needs a fuse or breaker sized to the cable feeding it, not just the device plugged in, and combination panels with several switches in one housing simplify wiring but concentrate several circuits behind one cutout, so plan cable runs to the panel before cutting the hole.
