Specifying a thruster for the boat, not just the tunnel

Thruster sizing starts with waterline length, displacement and windage rather than the tunnel diameter alone, since a tunnel that fits the bow does not automatically mean the motor behind it is powerful enough to hold the bow against a crosswind at the marina. Voltage (12V or 24V) generally follows whatever the rest of the boat's electrical system already runs on, since running a separate battery bank purely for the thruster is rarely worthwhile.

Control ranges from simple on-off toggle operation through to proportional control, which varies thrust with how far the joystick or button is pushed rather than giving full power immediately; proportional control makes fine positioning alongside a berth noticeably easier in a crosswind.

Installation also needs to account for battery placement close to the thruster motor to keep cable runs and voltage drop down, and a tunnel that is correctly finished and faired, since a rough tunnel exit measurably affects thrust efficiency.
