Fitting a wearable device mount

Wearable mounts and adapters exist mainly to solve one problem: getting a watch, tracker or handheld device securely positioned somewhere it can be seen at the helm without holding it. Adapter plates convert between mounting standards, which matters because manufacturers rarely share a common bolt pattern or ball size, so a mount bought for one device does not automatically fit another, even within the same product family across generations.

Check the mounting surface as well as the device: a RAM-style ball mount needs a compatible base, whether that is an existing arm, a flat surface plate, or a rail clamp for a pushpit or grab rail. Vibration and UV exposure are the two things that shorten the life of a mount at the helm, so a plastic clamp in constant sun will need replacing sooner than a stainless fitting in a sheltered position.
