Sizing cable for the current draw
Cable size on a boat should be chosen from the current the circuit will actually draw and the length of the run, not just what fits the terminal. A run that is too long for its cross sectional area causes voltage drop under load, which shows up as dim lights, slow charging or an inverter cutting out well before the battery is empty. ABYC guidance gives maximum run lengths for a given amperage and cable size, and it is worth checking this rather than reusing whatever gauge came off the old cable.
Tinned copper conductors resist the corrosion that plain copper suffers in a marine atmosphere, particularly at crimped terminals below the waterline or in a damp engine bay. Every positive cable needs a fuse or breaker sized to the cable, fitted as close to the battery as practical, not just at the load end; this protects the cable itself in a short, not only the equipment it feeds. Waterproof heat shrink terminals and a proper crimp tool make a real difference to long term reliability.
