Sizing a power system that fits together
Every power system on a boat is really several systems working together: a charge source, a battery bank, a way to convert or distribute that power, and something to tell you what state it is all in. The trick is matching each piece to the others rather than buying components in isolation. An alternator regulator set up for flooded lead acid will undercharge a lithium bank, and an inverter/charger needs a battery bank sized to accept its charging current without overheating.
Voltage matters as much as capacity: 12V and 24V systems use different cable gauges and fusing to carry the same power safely, and DC-DC converters exist specifically to bridge banks running at different voltages, such as a 24V house system fed from a 12V engine alternator. Battery monitoring, whether from Victron Energy or Mastervolt, reads shunt data and reports it over its own network, so check it talks to your existing displays before committing to a brand.
