Picking the right connection for your cruising range
Coastal cruising and offshore passages call for different connectivity, and it is worth matching the system to where you actually sail rather than buying for the one long trip a year. A 4G/5G router with an external antenna covers most UK and near-Continental cruising within mobile signal range, while Starlink or a stabilised satellite system is the only realistic option once you are properly offshore.
Antenna and dome siting matters as much as the unit itself: mobile antennas want height and a clear line to shore, while satellite domes need an unobstructed view of the sky through their full range of motion, clear of radar arches, masts and rigging. Power draw and cable runs should be planned before installation, since domes and routers are often fed through the same conduit as other electronics and benefit from being kept on their own fused circuit.
