Integrating a trolling motor with your plotter
A trolling motor's usefulness on a modern boat depends heavily on how well it talks to the electronics already on board. Spot-lock, anchor and route-following features rely on a GPS position feed, so check whether the motor networks directly with your chartplotter brand or needs its own antenna and control head before assuming those features will work out of the box. Motors that do integrate typically add a menu or overlay on the plotter screen rather than running as a separate system.
Shaft length needs matching to bow height above the waterline, and battery voltage determines both the thrust available and the cabling and fusing needed to feed it. Running heavy gauge cable direct from the battery bank, properly fused, avoids voltage drop under load, which is one of the more common reasons a trolling motor underperforms its rating.
