Keeping an ageing autopilot running

An autopilot spare is only useful if it matches the drive type already fitted, so start there. B&G systems are built around either a hydraulic linear drive, a mechanical wheel or below-deck drive, or a rotary drive on smaller boats, and course computers, drive units and rudder reference sensors are not shared across all three.

The course computer is usually the part worth checking first when steering becomes erratic, since it is the hub that talks to the compass, rudder reference and NMEA 2000 or SeaTalkng network; a fault here often shows up as intermittent rather than total failure. Rudder reference units drift out of calibration over time rather than failing outright, so recalibrating before replacing one can save an unnecessary purchase.

Hydraulic drives need bleeding correctly after any pump or ram replacement, and a poorly bled system is a common reason a supposedly faulty drive still hunts after the part has been swapped.
