Choosing an AIS receiver

An AIS receiver listens for the position reports broadcast by nearby vessels and shows them on your chartplotter, PC or tablet. Unlike a transceiver it does not transmit your own position, so it is the lower-cost route to seeing commercial traffic in busy shipping lanes and harbour approaches.

The main decisions are how the unit connects and how it gets its signal. NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 models feed an existing plotter directly, while USB and wireless receivers suit laptop or tablet navigation software. Dual-channel receivers monitor both AIS frequencies at once and will typically pick up more targets than single-channel units.

You will also need a VHF-band antenna. Many boats fit an antenna splitter so one masthead aerial serves both the VHF radio and the AIS receiver. If you are not sure what will work with your display, send us your setup and we will confirm compatibility before you order.
