Sharing one aerial between radios

Splitting one VHF aerial between a radio and an AIS receiver avoids a second masthead cable, but it isn't free: every splitter introduces some insertion loss, and a passive splitter shared between transmitting devices can affect both range and how cleanly a signal is received. Where mast or arch space allows a second antenna, running VHF and AIS on separate aerials generally gives cleaner performance than any splitter, though that isn't always practical on a smaller boat.

Where you do need to share, check the splitter is rated for the combination of devices connecting to it. AIS receivers that only receive have different requirements to those that also transmit, and a VHF radio's transmit power needs to be within what the splitter is designed to pass without damage. Connector type at each end should match the cable already run to the masthead, typically PL259 on VHF, so confirm fittings before ordering rather than assuming a universal fit.
