Planning a clean NMEA 2000 backbone
A NMEA 2000 network is built as a single backbone with short drop cables branching off to each device, not a daisy chain of instruments. Every backbone needs a terminator, typically a 120 ohm resistor plug, at each end, and a single power tap feeding 12V into the backbone through its own fuse, sized so the whole network draws within the cable's rated current.
Connector standards vary by manufacturer even though the underlying protocol is identical: most brands use the five-pin Micro-C connector, but some older or larger devices use the bulkier DeviceNet fitting, and adaptors exist to mix the two on one backbone. Actisense interfaces are useful where you need to bridge a NMEA 2000 network to older NMEA 0183 instruments or a PC, without every device on the network needing to support both protocols natively.
Total backbone length and the number of devices both have manufacturer limits, so it is worth mapping the network out before ordering cable.
