Mounting a thermal camera without vibration

Thermal image quality depends heavily on how stable the mount is, since even small amounts of vibration blur the image far more noticeably in thermal than in daylight video. A rigid mount, fitted somewhere clear of engine and genset vibration where possible, generally outperforms a lighter bracket fitted closer to the source of the shake, even if the camera itself is the same model in both cases.

Pan and tilt mounts need enough clearance around their full range of movement to avoid fouling on rails, aerials or other equipment nearby, which is worth checking with the camera in position before final fitting rather than after. Cable routing from a mast or arch mounted camera down to the display should avoid sharp bends and be secured at intervals along its length, since a cable left to swing in the wind will eventually fatigue at the connector. Mounting height also affects how much of the horizon the camera can see without obstruction from the boat's own structure.
