Networking displays with your existing sensors
Instrument packs from B&G, Simrad and Garmin are built around their own display and sensor ranges, Triton and H5000 on B&G's SimNet-compatible NMEA 2000 backbone, IS42 and I3000 on Simrad's equivalent, and GMI or GNX on Garmin's Marine Network, but all of them will read standard NMEA 2000 data such as depth, wind and boat speed regardless of which brand supplied the original sensor. That makes it possible to add a display from one brand to sensors from another, provided the backbone uses standard connectors or the right adaptor cable.
Sailing systems in particular depend on getting the underlying sensors right before the display: wind angle and boat speed data are only as good as the transducer and masthead unit feeding them, and a high-end display will not correct for a poorly calibrated sensor. It is worth checking your existing backbone's connector type, SeaTalkng, SimNet or standard Micro-C, before adding a new display to an older boat's network.
