Keeping speed sensors accurate
A through-hull paddlewheel sensor gives a direct water speed reading, which is what feeds true wind calculations and performance data on a Raymarine instrument display, but only if the paddlewheel spins freely. Antifouling paint applied over the sensor face, or marine growth on the paddlewheel itself, is one of the most common causes of an erratic or flatlined speed reading, so check and clean the sensor before assuming a fault.
Calibration matters as much as the hardware: a new sensor needs its calibration figure set against a known distance or GPS speed to read accurately, since paddlewheel sensors vary slightly from unit to unit. Wiring on current systems is generally NMEA 2000, so a replacement sensor should match the data protocol of the display it feeds rather than an older SeaTalk connection.
