Positioning a display at the helm

A touchscreen chartplotter needs to sit somewhere it can be seen clearly in direct sunlight, reached without leaning across the helm, and kept clear of spray, which is why mounting position often matters as much as the display's own specification. A flush mount gives the cleanest look and best protection from the elements but commits to a fixed position and panel cut-out, while a pod or bracket mount allows the screen to be angled and, in some cases, removed for storage.

Networking is what actually connects a display to sonar, radar, engine data and other instruments, generally over Ethernet for chart and sonar data and NMEA 2000 for instrument data, so check port count and cable type before assuming a single display can take every data source you plan to add. Multiple displays networked together can mirror or share data, which is worth considering at the helm and flybridge stage rather than adding a second screen later on.
