Radome or open array: what suits your boat
A radome houses the antenna in a fixed enclosure and suits most leisure boats: it is compact, unobtrusive on a mast or arch, and needs no clearance for a rotating arm. An open array antenna sits exposed and rotates within its own housing, giving a narrower beam width for better target and land definition at range, which is why larger cruisers, commercial vessels and serious offshore boats tend to specify one.
Whichever type you choose, the mount matters as much as the scanner. Seaview's mast and arch platforms are built for the vibration and load a rotating antenna puts through a mount over years of use, and matching the mount's bolt pattern and weight rating to your specific radar model avoids problems later. Cable run length between the radar and the display also needs checking against the manufacturer's maximum for the connector type in use, particularly on larger boats where the helm sits some distance from the mast.
