Keeping an autopilot running
Autopilot spares are specific to the drive type fitted, not just the brand, so identify whether you have a wheel pilot, a below-decks linear or rotary drive, or a hydraulic system before ordering. A drive belt or clutch for one wheel pilot generation will not necessarily fit an earlier or later model from the same maker, and part numbers change more often than the outward appearance of the unit.
Wear tends to show up first in the drive mechanism rather than the electronics: belts stretch, clutches slip under load, and seals on hydraulic rams harden and start to weep. Catching these early avoids the course-keeping getting sloppy long before the pilot fails outright.
When you replace a mechanical part it is worth checking the fluxgate compass and rudder reference sensor calibration at the same time, since a pilot that has been struggling mechanically is often also carrying a stale calibration.
