What separates a cable drive from a rotary drive

Cable and rotary autopilot drives both work with mechanical steering rather than hydraulic, but they connect to the steering system in different ways and are not interchangeable without changing how the boat steers. A cable drive works with a wheel and cable steering system, pulling the same cable the helm already turns, which keeps the autopilot and manual steering sharing one mechanism. A rotary or rack and pinion drive instead connects to a separate point in a rack and pinion steering system, driving the rudder more directly.

Getting this wrong at the ordering stage is one of the more common mistakes, since both types can look broadly similar out of the box despite needing completely different mounting points and steering hardware underneath. Matching the drive to the torque rating your rudder and hull actually need also matters; an undersized drive designed for a lighter boat will struggle to hold a course at speed or in following seas. Confirm your existing steering type before ordering a replacement drive.
