Choosing the right cable gauge
Cable gauge needs choosing against both the current a circuit will draw and the length of the run, not current alone. A long run to a bow thruster or windlass needs thicker cable than the same current over a short run to stay within an acceptable voltage drop, so it's worth working from a sizing chart against actual cable length rather than matching gauge to the fuse rating alone. Undersized cable on a long run is a common reason a thruster, winch or pump underperforms even when properly fused.
Tinned copper resists the corrosion plain copper suffers in a damp bilge or engine space, which matters more over a boat's working life than the small extra cost at purchase. Duplex cable, with two cores moulded together, suits DC circuits like navigation lights or bilge pumps where positive and negative run the same route; single-core cable remains standard for heavier battery and starter connections terminated separately at each end.
Pair any new cable run with correctly sized terminals and a fuse or breaker matched to the cable, not just the load.
