Picking the right cable gland type
Cable glands are not all interchangeable, even within a waterproof, IP66 rated range, since the right one depends on where and how the cable enters the enclosure. A through bulkhead gland is designed for a fixed panel thickness and single cable, sealing cleanly on both sides; a deck seal handles a through deck penetration exposed to standing water rather than an interior panel; and a multi cable gland lets several smaller cables share one entry point rather than drilling a separate hole for each.
Checking the cable's outer diameter against the gland's rated range matters more than checking the gland's overall size, since a gland tightened down onto a cable outside its rated range will not form a reliable seal even though it looks fitted correctly. Stainless hardware resists the corrosion that plated steel fittings eventually suffer in a marine environment, which is worth checking if you are matching a replacement gland to existing fittings elsewhere on the boat.
