Matching an amplifier to your speakers

Channel count and power rating only tell half the story when choosing a marine amplifier; impedance matching between the amp and your speakers or subwoofer determines whether you get clean output or an amplifier running hot and shutting down. Check the minimum impedance the amp is rated for against your speaker wiring, particularly if you are running multiple pairs off a single channel.

Class D amplifiers run cooler and more efficiently than older Class AB designs, which matters in an enclosed helm or under-seat locker with limited airflow. Conformal coating protects the circuit board from the salt-laden, humid air typical of a boat, but the amplifier still needs a dry, ventilated mounting position rather than a bilge or damp locker, and an IPX rating on the housing is not a substitute for keeping it out of standing water.

Wire gauge and fusing on the power feed should be sized to the amplifier's maximum current draw, not just its RMS rating, to avoid voltage drop under load.
