What makes a docking camera install work
Picture quality on a docking camera matters less than field of view and mounting position; a wide-angle lens mounted too high or too far forward on the transom will show the water behind the boat rather than the corner of the pontoon you actually need to see when reversing. Waterproof rating is worth checking against where the camera sits, since a transom-mounted unit sits in a much wetter environment than one mounted under a bimini.
Most docking cameras feed video directly to a compatible MFD rather than needing their own screen, so confirm your display supports a direct video input or NMEA 2000 video-over-network before buying, as not every plotter generation does. Cable runs from a transom camera back to the helm are often longer than expected, so measure the actual route rather than the straight-line distance before ordering cable.
