Choosing a thermal camera for the boat
Thermal cameras work on heat difference rather than light, which is why they pick out a swimmer, pot marker or another vessel in complete darkness or fog when a standard low-light camera cannot. Core resolution is the main thing that separates entry-level and higher-end thermal cameras: a coarser core shows a usable heat shape at close range, while a finer core resolves detail further out, which matters more on an offshore boat covering distance at night than one used mainly for evening returns to a home marina.
Fixed cameras are simpler to install and cheaper, covering a set forward or all-round field of view, while pan-and-tilt models let you actively search an area from the helm at the cost of a more involved mount and cable run. Most thermal cameras feed video to a compatible MFD over the same network as other cameras, so check your display supports the input before ordering.
