4G and 5G range: what to expect
A marine 4G or 5G antenna extends mobile signal range well beyond a handset held indoors, but it is still working with the same coastal and inshore network coverage as a phone ashore, so range drops off further offshore, unlike satellite systems which work anywhere with sky view. Glomex systems typically pair a roof or arch-mounted antenna with a router, boosting signal to and from a standard SIM card rather than replacing the SIM itself.
MIMO antennas, which use two elements rather than one, generally give a more stable connection in marginal signal areas than a single-element antenna, worth considering for a boat that spends time further from the coast. For genuinely offshore connectivity beyond mobile network range, a satellite system such as Starlink is the better fit rather than a 4G or 5G booster.
Mounting height affects range more than most other factors, so a higher position on the arch or radar mast is usually worth prioritising over antenna gain figures alone.
