Find out moreWhat a DSC VHF needs to work
A fixed VHF only delivers its full range and DSC distress functionality once it is properly set up, not simply switched on. That means programming a unique MMSI number into the radio before first use, a step that cannot be undone without a full reset on most sets, connecting it to a GPS position source, usually over NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000 depending on the model, so distress calls carry an accurate position, and fitting a matched antenna and cable run rather than reusing whatever aerial happens to be nearest.
Cable loss increases with run length and jumps sharply at poor connections, so a long run from a flybridge helm to a masthead antenna benefits from low-loss cable rather than standard coax, and every joint in that run is a potential point of water ingress if not sealed properly.
B&G's fixed sets integrate with the brand's own chartplotters and instruments over NMEA 2000, showing AIS targets and DSC alerts on the plotter screen rather than only on the radio's own display.
