Choosing power and range for larger vessels

Radar specified for commercial and larger vessels is generally judged on transmit power and antenna length rather than the compact convenience that matters most on a small leisure boat. Higher power output and a longer open array antenna both improve range and the ability to resolve separate targets that are close together, which matters when working in busy traffic separation schemes or tracking several vessels at once.

Antenna size and mount weight need checking against the mast or arch structure before ordering, since a longer open array puts considerably more load and windage through its mount than a radome ever does. Cable runs between antenna and display also tend to be longer on larger vessels, so confirming the maximum supported cable length for your chosen radar avoids a costly surprise partway through installation.
