What spot lock and autopilot actually do
Spot lock uses the motor's own GPS position to hold station automatically, correcting for wind and current without input from the angler, which is genuinely useful for holding position over a mark rather than constantly adjusting a foot pedal or joystick. Route following and heading hold features work similarly, using GPS to steer along a saved track or a fixed compass heading, which suits working a shoreline or a contour rather than open water positioning.
These features draw more current than simply running the motor at a set speed, since the motor is constantly making small corrections, so battery capacity is worth checking against a full day's use rather than just against thrust output. Chartplotter integration lets routes and waypoints created on the display be sent directly to the motor, which is more convenient than programming a route on the motor's own control, but it depends on both devices being from a compatible ecosystem and running current software.
