Chain Counters
Quick Chain Counters — part of the Quick Anchoring Systems & Capstans range.
Setting up chain counting correctly
A chain counter needs calibrating to the actual chain fitted, not just the windlass model, since chain gauge and link length affect how far the chain travels per revolution of the gypsy. Recalibrate after any chain replacement, even if the new chain looks the same size, as a small variation in link length will drift the counter's accuracy over a long rode.
The counter unit itself is usually mounted at the helm or windlass control point, wired back to a sensor at the gypsy or chain locker, so plan the cable run at the same time as the counter to avoid an awkward retrofit later. Check the sensor is positioned where it reliably detects each link or magnet pass, since a marginal mounting position causes missed counts rather than an outright failure.
Display style varies between models, some show a simple digit count and others integrate depth or windlass status alongside chain paid out, so check what the display actually shows before choosing one.
