Fitting a horizontal cable gland
A horizontal gland is chosen over a vertical one mainly for clearance, since it enters the panel from the side rather than needing headroom above and below the cutout, which suits tight consoles, pod bases and bulkheads where a vertical gland simply will not fit. Check the gland's cable diameter range against the actual cable or bundle passing through it, including the connector if it is being fed through assembled, since many glands only accept a bare cable end and need connectors fitted afterwards.
Drill the mounting hole to the size specified for that gland rather than judging it by eye, as an oversized hole compromises the seal even with a compliant cable, and always fit the supplied gasket rather than relying on sealant alone. Where more than one cable needs to pass through the same point, a multi-cable gland avoids drilling several separate holes and keeps the bulkhead or pod base stronger.
