Retractable versus tunnel thrusters

A retractable thruster answers a different problem to a tunnel thruster: rather than cutting a permanent tunnel through the hull, the prop and leg lower into the water only when needed and retract flush against the hull the rest of the time. That makes it an option on hulls where a tunnel isn't practical, whether due to hull shape, limited displacement forward, or a wish to avoid the drag and cavitation noise a tunnel opening can add at speed.

The trade-off is mechanical complexity: a retractable unit has a moving leg and drive mechanism with its own seals, so periodic inspection for wear and corrosion matters more here than on a fixed tunnel thruster. Deployment is typically electric or hydraulic, and needs power and control wiring run to both the drive motor and the retraction mechanism, so plan for two circuits rather than one when wiring in.
