Reading your battery bank accurately
A simple voltage gauge tells you roughly where a battery bank stands, but voltage alone is a poor guide to actual state of charge, particularly under load or shortly after charging has stopped, when a resting battery needs time to settle before the reading means much. For a genuinely accurate picture of amp hours in and out, a shunt based monitor reading current rather than voltage gives a far better result.
Where you fit the gauge matters too: it should read the bank you actually want to monitor, whether that's the house bank, the starting battery, or both via separate gauges, rather than a single reading that blends them together and tells you very little about either.
Stepping up to a full monitoring panel from Victron or Mastervolt adds logging and alarms on top of a basic reading, which is worth considering if you're relying more heavily on lithium or a larger house bank.
