Fitting a solenoid valve into your circuit

A solenoid valve needs to be matched to the voltage and current of the circuit it is switching, typically 12V or 24V on a windlass or anchoring system, and undersizing the valve for the load it switches shortens its working life considerably. Check the valve's rated current against what the equipment it controls actually draws at start-up, not just its running current.

These valves are usually wired into a proportional or remote control circuit rather than switched directly by a helm switch, acting as the link between a low-current control signal and the higher current the main equipment needs. Mounting position should keep the valve dry and accessible for replacement, since it sits inline with wiring that is awkward to reach once other equipment is fitted around it.
