Sealing cable entries properly

A cable gland's job is straightforward, but getting it right matters: it needs to seal against water ingress at the point a cable enters or exits a deck, bulkhead or enclosure, without crushing or chafing the cable itself over time as the boat flexes and vibrates. Choosing between a single cable and a multi cable gland depends on how many runs need to pass through one point, and cramming several cables through a gland sized for one is a common cause of leaks.

Deck seals see the harshest conditions, sitting exposed to sun, salt and standing water, so UV resistant material and stainless fixings are worth the extra cost over a generic gland bought elsewhere. Bulkhead glands inside the boat have an easier life but still need a proper seal to stop water tracking along a cable run from a wet locker into a dry one.

Measure the outer diameter of the cable, or cables, accurately before ordering, since a gland sized too loosely won't seal no matter how well it's fitted.
