Sizing a water heater for your boat

Boiler capacity is usually the first thing to get right: a small tank recovers hot water quickly but runs out fast with a full crew, while a larger tank holds more but takes longer to heat and needs more space to install. Match the litre capacity to how many people are aboard and how the boat is actually used, day trips versus living aboard, rather than fitting the biggest tank that will squeeze in.

Most boilers in this range can draw heat from engine coolant as well as an electrical element, so check whether your engine has the fittings to run a coolant loop to the tank if you want heat recovery underway rather than relying solely on shore power or a generator.

Mounting orientation and access for the pressure relief valve and drain point need checking against the installation instructions, since getting this wrong at fit-out is harder to correct once plumbing and cabinetry are in around it.
