Multipurpose Capstans
Quick Multipurpose Capstans — part of the Quick Anchoring Systems & Capstans range.
Matching a capstan to your rode
A capstan differs from a conventional windlass in how it grips the rope or chain: rather than a chain gypsy pulling rode through a fixed path, a capstan uses a rotating drum that the rope is wrapped around by hand, giving direct control over tension and speed and making it useful for docklines and general hauling as well as anchoring. That flexibility makes a multipurpose capstan a practical choice on boats that want one winch doing several jobs rather than a dedicated windlass for anchoring alone.
Sizing depends on rope diameter and pulling load rather than boat length alone, so check the drum size against the rope or line you actually intend to use, as too thin a rope on a capstan sized for heavier line will not grip reliably. Power draw is significant under load, so confirm system voltage, 12V or 24V, and make sure the supply cable and breaker are rated for the capstan's stall current, not just its running current, before wiring it in.
