Crimping and extending solar cable safely
MC4 connectors are polarised, so the male and female halves only mate one way, and positive and negative should never be mixed between panels even though the connectors themselves will physically join if forced. Check polarity at each connection before energising the array, since a reversed connection can damage a charge controller that is not protected against it.
Pre-terminated extension leads avoid a field crimp entirely, which is worth choosing over a raw cable and separate connectors unless you already have the correct crimping tool, since a poorly crimped MC4 connector is a common source of a high-resistance joint and heat build-up in a solar circuit. Y-connectors allow two panels to join in parallel but should only be used where the panels and controller are rated for the combined current.
Match cable cross-section to run length and current to avoid voltage drop, particularly on longer runs between panel and MPPT controller.
