Dome size and reception while under way

Satellite TV domes hold a gyro-stabilised antenna that tracks the satellite as the boat moves, and dome diameter is the main factor in how well that tracking holds up in a seaway; a larger dome generally keeps a locked signal through more roll and pitch than a compact model, mattering more to a boat that cruises regularly than one used mainly at a berth. Coastal digital TV antennas are a simpler, non-tracking alternative, adequate close to shore but not usable once out of terrestrial broadcast range.

Reception also depends on line of sight to the satellite, so a dome mounted low or shadowed by a mast, arch or radar scanner will drop out more often than one mounted clear and high. Satellite communication systems for voice and data are a separate product from satellite TV, aimed at connectivity rather than entertainment, and the two are often confused when planning a fit-out.

Mount the dome on a stable, vibration-free platform, since motion at the mount itself works against the antenna's own stabilisation.
