Is digital switching worth the retrofit

Digital switching replaces banks of mechanical switches with output modules controlled from a touchscreen, keypad or app, and the main advantage over a traditional panel is flexibility: functions can be renamed, grouped or reassigned in software rather than by rewiring. CZone, EmpirBus and Maretron's N2KView take slightly different approaches to how modules, displays and programming interact, so it is worth understanding which ecosystem a given module belongs to before mixing components from more than one system.

On a retrofit, the practical question is usually less about the technology and more about wiring access: output modules still need a cable run to every light, pump or fan they control, so a boat with existing runs to a central panel is a far simpler job than one where cabling has to be pulled from scratch. Integration with a chartplotter over NMEA 2000 lets switching status show alongside navigation data, which is useful, but is not a substitute for planning where modules will physically sit.
